How ICO files work

An ICO file is a small container that holds the same image at several sizes, so Windows and browsers can pick the one that fits. This converter puts six sizes inside, 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, each stored as a PNG, which every current browser and Windows since Vista read.

Start from a square PNG at least 256 pixels wide. Transparency is kept. Small sizes are drawn from your full image with step-by-step downscaling, so they stay as sharp as the image allows.

Making a favicon for a website? The same tool also makes the SVG icon, home screen icons and web manifest. Download them all, or read which favicon sizes you actually need.

Questions

Can I convert a JPG or SVG instead?

Yes. Drop any image. An SVG gives the sharpest small sizes.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The ICO file is assembled in your browser, inside this page.
